Safe Home Safe Schools

Safe Homes, Safe Schools is a package of two public acts that together require the MDHHS to develop materials related to secure storage in Michigan. These materials are then distributed to educators and caregivers by both public and non-public schools annually.

Public Act No. 257 of 2024

Requires the development of materials about Michigan’s secure storage law by MDHHS.

Materials must include, at minimum:

  • An overview of Michigan’s secure storage law
  • An FAQ about Michigan’s secure storage law
  • Guidance on where parents can obtain gun locks or gun safes, including free or low-cost options
  • The materials must be developed in English, Spanish, and Arabic.

Public Act No. 258 of 2024

Requires that the board of a school district or intermediate school district, the board of directors of a public school academy, or the governing body of a nonpublic school distribute the materials developed by MDHHS by physical or electronic mail to the parent or legal guardian of every enrolled student. The Act further requires that school districts and the Michigan Department of Education post the materials to their websites, and protects MDE and school distributors from civil liability that may arise from the distribution of these materials.

MDHHS will work with MDE to develop an implementation plan, and MDE will distribute the final materials to school districts. Materials are likely to be shared through MDE’s weekly communication to school districts, as well as posted as a memo on their website.
